چکیده

We have investigated the strength of ultraviolet Fe II emission from quasars within the environments of Large Quasar Groups (LQGs) in comparison with quasars elsewhere, for 1.1 6 z̄LQG 6 1.7, using the DR7QSO catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We use the Weymann et al. W2400 equivalent width, defined between the rest-frame continuum-windows 2240–2255 and 2665–2695 Å, as the measure of the UV Fe II emission. We find a significant shift of the W2400 distribution to higher values for quasars within LQGs, predominantly for those LQGs with 1.1 6 z̄LQG 6 1.5. There is a tentative indication that the shift to higher values increases with the quasar i magnitude. We find evidence that within LQGs the ultrastrong emitters withW2400 > 45 Å (more precisely, ultrastrong-plus with W2400 > 44 Å) have preferred nearest-neighbour separations of ∼ 30–50 Mpc to the adjacent quasar of any W2400 strength. No such effect is seen for the ultrastrong emitters that are not in LQGs. The possibilities for increasing the strength of the Fe II emission appear to be iron abundance, Ly-α fluorescence, and microturbulence, and probably all of these operate. The dense environment of the LQGs may have led to an increased rate of star formation and an enhanced abundance of iron in the nuclei of galaxies. Similarly the dense environment may have led to more active blackholes and increased Ly-α fluorescence. The preferred nearest-neighbour separation for the stronger emitters would appear to suggest a dynamical component, such as microturbulence. In one particular LQG, the Huge-LQG (the largest structure known in the early universe), six of the seven strongest emitters very obviously form three pairings within the total of 73 members.

An Empirical Ultraviolet Template for Iron Emission in Quasars as Derived from I Zw 1

We present an empirical template spectrum suitable for fitting and subtract-ing/studying the Fe ii and Fe iii emission lines in the restframe ultraviolet spectra of quasars and active galatic nuclei, the first empirical ultraviolet iron template to cover the full range of λ1250−3090Å. Iron emission is often a severe contaminant in optical– ultraviolet spectra of active galactic nuclei and quasa...

Ultraviolet Fe II emission in z ∼ 2 quasars

We present spectra of six luminous quasars at z ∼ 2, covering rest wavelengths 1600−3200 Å. The fluxes of the UV Fe II emission lines and Mg II λ2798 doublet, the line widths of Mg II, and the 3000 Å luminosity were obtained from the spectra. These quantities were compared with those of low-redshift quasars at z = 0.06−0.55 studied by Tsuzuki et al. In a plot of the Fe II(UV)/Mg II flux ratio a...

Near - Infrared Spectroscopy of the High - Redshift Quasar S

We present near-infrared (observed frame) spectra of the high-redshift quasar S4 0636]68 at z\ 3.2, which was previously thought to be one of a group of ““ strong ÏÏ Fe II emitters [i.e., F(Fe II jj4434È 4684)/F(Hb)[ 1]. Our K-band spectrum clearly shows emission lines of Hb and [O III] jj4959, 5007, as well as optical Fe II emission. Our computed value of F(Fe II jj4434È4684)/F(Hb) ^ 0.8 for S...

Wavelength (å)

We present near-infrared (observed frame) spectra of the high-redshift quasar S4 0636+68 at z = 3.2 which was previously thought to be one of a group of “strong” Fe II emitters (i.e., F (Fe IIλλ4434–4684)/F (Hβ) > 1). Our K-band spectrum clearly shows emission lines of Hβ and [O III]λλ4959, 5007 as well as optical Fe II emission. Our computed value of F (Fe II λλ4434–4684)/F (Hβ) ≃ 0.8 for S4 0...

The far-infrared emission of radio loud and radio quiet quasars

Continuum observations at radio, millimetre, infrared and soft X-ray energies are presented for a sample of 22 quasars, consisting of flat and steep spectrum radio loud, radio intermediate and radio quiet objects. The primary observational distinctions, among the different kinds of quasars in the radio and IR energy domains are studied using large observational datasets provided by ISOPHOT on b...
